That Pinko Commie Socialized Medicine Thing

Thu Dec 30, 2004 at 01:58:51 PM PDT

Bear with me here.  I am developing my argument for universal health care and in doing so I have been doing quite a bit of research.  Unsurprisingly, there are far more libertarian and republican anti-socialized medicine articles (mostly editorial in content).  As I learn more, I hope to refine my arguments and speak to attacks on universal care.

The term Socialized Medicine is used to describe a system of publicly administered national health care.  In advanced nations socialized medicine is the norm rather than the exception.  Great Britain, Israel, Canada, Sweden, Germany, and France all have socialized medicine.

Being Against Illegal Immigration Don't Mean Your Not A Democrat

Being from California, the so called "bastion of liberalism" and a bleeding heart liberal, you would think that I would be fully supportive of illegal immigration, yet I am not.

In fact, when everything was said and done, Proposition 187 (this was a measure that would have halted social programs for illegal immigrants in California) passed with something like 59 percent of the California vote.

How can that happen in the bastion of liberalism you might ask?  How could so many people be so unempathetic, racist even?

What Aren't They Telling You?

Repeatedly we have been sold a bill of goods.  We have been told that one of the biggest problems we face is too much government control.  Think Savings and Loans or Electricity.  We are told that if we let them take away the controls and let the free market function everybody benefits, but do we?

No Room For Dissent

I am a liberal, particularly a social liberal.  Most of my viewpoints can easily be described at progressive.

I have read this board and really love many of the postings and have seen a ton of thoughtful ideas.  I have been energized to write to my representatives, speak out to my friends and better educate my family as to the issues that are involved, and for that I will always be grateful.
